Now that the leaves have fallen off, the grapes have been removed, as well as the unwanted shoots, pruning has begun at Vriesenhof . The timing of pruning the vineyards is extremely important. Early pruning or pre-pruning, as we call it is essential to promote even bud break of the vines during early Spring. This will be followed by spur pruning towards the end of August. Spur pruning is done as late as possible, weather depending, to try and avoid the harshest part of the Summer, allowing for the fruit to ripen more evenly.
This is a very rewarding time for our team as it heralds the end of one season and the beginning of a new one and allows us to shift focus from the cellar to the vineyards.
